WTF Linkin Park?

March 24, 2017

In a recent interview Chester Bennington said of the band's newer pop-friendly style, “It doesn’t matter what style we write in, as long as it comes from a pure place".

I'll pull on this that I say, "it does matter, Chester." It matters to the fans who bought your first three albums and launched your band into super stardom. It matters to the fans who are invested in your classic sound and are affected by the way your songs made (and still make) them feel. I remember being in a mom and pop used record store hearing "One Step Closer" for the first time. It blew my mind. I asked the clerk "WHO IS THIS???". He said "new band called Linkin park, just came in yesterday." I was hooked. Since then my musical tastes have grown and Linkin Park's sound has drifted far from where they began. But it still takes me back hearing "One Step Closer" and "In The End". Look, I'm not naiive enough to click my heels together in attention and demand bands stay the same throughout their careers. That's silly. They were 20 when they wrote Hybrid Theory, and now they're in their 40's. They're different people. But to you Chester I say go ahead, you do you, turn your metal band into a pop band if it makes you happy...just don't be surprised when your core audience abandons you the way you abandoned them.
